Large numbers of people in the Qasr El-Nil district welcomed political activist Gameela Ismail last Tuesday in her first official tour of the area. Gameela wandered the streets with some of her supporters in the constituency where she is running for parliament against the current MP, NDP candidate Hisham Mostafa Khalil.
Gameela was warmly welcomed by residents, especially in the "Maarouf" area and downtown. She was keen on shaking hands with shopkeepers and people sitting at sidewalk cafes, and explained her election program to them.
Some of the members of Gameela's campaign distributed leaflets carrying the campaign's slogan - "An arrow in the eye of corruption" - which included Gameela's biography and her reasons for running. In the program, Gameela stated that Qasr el-Nil is the place where she was born and where she studied, where she lives, works and even where she practices her political activities. Gameela clarified that she decided to run this elections to be the mouthpiece of helpless people, and the voice of people who refuse to participate in politics because of the lack of alternatives.
Gameela said that she refused to run in the women’s quota, and would run for a normal seat because she refuses to distinguish positively or negatively between citizens. She also announced that she challenges the dominance of the NDP and the failure and corruption of some members of Parliament known to be members of medical treatment, torturers, corrupt and services agents.
